Corals

Polyp extension in hard corals can vary. This Pavona maldivensis was observed to have full polyp extension in the middle of the day.

This tank raised specimen of the same species will often have its polyps open and closed at irregular intervals. This behavior does not appear to be the result of feeding schedules or from any irritation by neighboring fish or invertebrats.

Some corals like this Tongue coral are found in nature on both hard or soft bottom substrates. They will often extend short small tentacles during night time hours to feed.

In aquariums, they are usually placed on sandy bottoms and their feeding tentacles can be extended more often than not as they adapt to captive feeding regiments.
