Marine Algae

A variety of algal forms can be found in marine aquariums that occur in a range of size, color, shape, and texture. Though often considered a problem by most aquarists, they have an important role to play in both tanks and the natural world.

Turf algae contribute to the coral reef environment on many different levels. They take up nutrients both good and bad, are a home to many tiny life forms that live upon the little branches, and are food to a diverse group of herbivores.

Halimeda are maco-algae that can occur in very fine sediments contributing to the development of beach sand in some areas. Or, some species may be found growing on rock. These hard algae can effect calcium and alkalinity levels when kept in aquariums.

Other macro algae such as this Turbinaria ornata grow on hard surfaces, grow relatively slowly, and look quite nice. Unfortunately, this is not a macro-algae that is readily available in the aquarium trade.
